Explicitly Teaching Writing Workshop
Improving teacher knowledge, methods and skills.

As children are now assessed nationally using a criteria based assessment, teachers must explicitly teach students about the text, sentence and word level demands of text.
This practical hands-on session will focus on explicitly teaching children how to make word choices appropriate to the text type. We will examine the words that make different texts work in both the ability to construct them and comprehend them.
The session will focus on strategies to scaffold students’ writing. Whilst we will look at a wide range of texts that the curriculum demands, we will focus particularly on explanations.
Session Outline:
- Linking reading and writing
- Identifying the features of a range of text types at the whole text, sentence and word level
- Explicitly teaching children how to make word choices when writing in a range of text types
- Benchmarking and assessing children’s writing
- Using student writing as a tool for assessment -linking assessment to specific text types writing skills
