Comprehending Text

Curricula requires children to comprehend a wide range of texts. As teachers, we must explicitly teach our children how to comprehend. The session will focus on the importance of both narrative and factual texts for our students as they engage with the curriculum. It will specifically look at strategies to help children develop comprehension skills that allow them to interpret and add meaning to their reading.
Session Outline:

Identifying the features, at the whole text, sentence and word level, of a range of text types

Assisting students to identify key words within different texts

Identifying and working with the three levels of comprehension: literal, interpretive /inferential and response

The importance of correctly levelled texts to support understanding

Critical Literacy as a level of comprehension

Visual literacy and its importance in fully understanding text

Teaching learning strategies to teach comprehension :Skimming and Scanning, Building Technical Vocabulary, Collaborative Strategic Thinking

Utilising scaffolds to support comprehension of differing texts

Examining the model of developing Balanced Readers
