Nelson Maths for New Zealand: Connecting Number Facts to Applications has been written by leading mathematics educators, Peter Hughes, Lynne Petersen and Judy Duncan, and has been extensively researched and trialled with students and teachers throughout development.

Peter taught in secondary schools in New Zealand and England for 14 years, including six years as Head of Mathematics at Glenfield College, Auckland. He spent two years at the Cook Islands Teachers College as lecturer in Mathematics Education and has been a lecturer in Mathematics Education at the Faculty of Education, University of Auckland, since 1987, except for a year spent at Palmerston North Teachers College. He has co-authored 17 mathematics textbooks published in four countries, plus a series of 12 booklets published in the United States. Over the years he has contributed 22 articles to the New Zealand Mathematics Magazine. Peter is currently on leave and is working on the National Numeracy Project.

Lynne has taught in primary schools in Canada and New Zealand over the past 10 years, most recently as Senior Teacher of Middle School at Dominion Road School, Auckland. She spent two years working as a lecturer in Mathematics Education at the Faculty of Education, University of Auckland, as well as Numeracy Facilitator and team leader with the Ministry of Education National Numeracy Project. Lynne has edited a number of current primary mathematics resources in use in New Zealand and Australia. In her current position as an independent education consultant, Lynne is passionate about developing quality thinking and opportunities for learners of all ages.

Judy Dncan Judy Duncan

Judy has been producing and directing educational video resources for 18 years. She formerly had her own company, Video Campus Ltd., and rejoined the Faculty of Education, University of Auckland, in 2003. Judy has produced and/or directed over 150 videos, the majority of which are used in flexible ways, often without a facilitator or lecturer. She has worked on the Numeracy Project since 1996, and was a Flexible Learning Leader in NZ in 2006. Her research is to do with pedagogic design guidelines for multi-media practitioners. She has a reputation in NZ and internationally for crafting resources that identify the viewer as a learner, participating in an active process that stimulates and improves the mental functioning: learning.
