‘There is a recognised plateau in literacy learning in middle and upper primary. It’s important that these students are given the opportunity to interact with a wide range of carefully levelled texts, and exposed to a variety of text types, text form and genres.’

Nelson Literacy Directions is a brand new core literacy program for students in middle and upper primary. Featuring an emphasis on comprehension, Nelson Literacy Directions provides a wide variety of printed and electronic texts for explicit instruction in written language, oral language, visual literacy and critical literacy.

Improve your students' inferential comprehension, grammar and vocabulary

The use of inferential comprehension is built into Nelson Literacy Directions. The 'Making Meaning' questions which accompany the levelled text and levelled exemplar cards emphasise the use of higher order thinking skills. A warm-up literal question is followed by a series of inferential comprehension questions at the word, sentence, paragraph, text, text and visual levels, then ending with a response question.

Support your students with fine-grade levelling

The carefully levelled texts and exemplar cards provide scaffolded support for students at different stages of learning.

Expose your students to a variety of text types and text forms

Text types featured throughout Nelson Literacy Directions include recount, description, information report, narrative, procedure, exposition, explanation and discussion. Text forms include reader's theatre, graphic fiction, traditional tales, poetry, web blogs, technical reports, presentations and debates.

Integrate curriculum content while teaching literacy

The themes and topics in Nelson Literacy Directions link to the Sciences, Humanities and Arts curricula.

Each level comprises
